Mocktails of the Season (Wassail)

Recipe by Renee Jergigan

When I was a kid, my mom’s best friend would bring a version of this drink over to our house every year at Christmas time. She would bring it over in one of those electric coffee pots, plug it in and our whole house would smell like apples. It smells like Christmas to me.

The kids would drink it as is - it’s so delicious! The adults would usually spike it with some rum.

I’ve made it for several Christmastime gatherings and it’s always a hit! Since I’m alcohol free now, I enjoy it plain or I mix it with a little non-alcoholic rum if I want a little extra spice.

½ gallon apple cider (or apple juice)

2 cups orange juice

¼ cup lemon juice

4 cinnamon sticks

12 whole cloves

½ tsp ground ginger

½ tsp ground nutmeg

1 orange sliced

1 apple sliced

Combine all ingredients in crockpot or slow cooker (except for the sliced oranges and apples). Cook on low for 6-8 hours.

Add sliced oranges and apples at the end and serve in warm mugs.

Mix with AF rum if desired.
