Books I Recommend for my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Students!

Updated: 4 days ago

There are so many excellent books out there on yoga. I have many that I recommend for my students, from traditional to more modern. Here's what I suggest you read if you have a chance:

TRADITIONAL BOOKS

Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali by Edwin Bryant (https://amzn.to/3TaESc4)

There are many different Pantanjali texts and interpretations, so tons of great resources out there. This one is my favourite, I believe it was recommended to me for my 300 Hour Training in 2017 and I've used it as a reference book since then.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami Muktibodhananda Saraswati (https://amzn.to/3I8loyJ)

This is another traditional text I read for my 300 Hour Training in 2017. It includes the entire science of Hatha Yoga and is an excellent read to get a grasp on all the various practices that traditional sadhana includes.

MORE MODERN BOOKS

Embrace Yoga's Roots by Susanna Baraktaki (https://amzn.to/3uOCazN)

This is an excellent book about cultural appropriation and yoga. In this book, Susanna explains some really important concepts about how we can have an authentic practice while being respectful of yoga's origins.

Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates (https://amzn.to/3uOCazN)

This was the very first yoga philosophy book I ever read in 2010 and it completely changed my worldview. I highly recommend picking up this book and reading some of the short essays - they are transformative!

ANATOMY

Yoga Anatomy by Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Matthews (https://amzn.to/49M5wO5)

This Yoga Anatomy Book is recommended. We have thorough anatomy lessons in our Yoga Teacher Training textbook, however, this book is an excellent additional resource.

Do you have any other books you recommend to add to this list?
